What Are Snap Hooks?

Snap hooks are durable connection solutions for rigging and anchoring in a variety of non-critical environments. They are ideal for securing chain, wire, rope, and slings, but they are not intended for lifting or fall arrest. Use these rigging fasteners in applications like fencing, marine settings, and farming.

Application Considerations:

There are several important factors to consider before using them in your application.

1.Load Requirements: It is important to know how much weight your mating rope, chain, wire, or other connecting material will need to hold, as this will influence the Working Load Limit (WLL) of the snap link.

2.Mating Hardware: Make sure whatever hardware you're connecting to the snap link is compatible with the size of the eyes on either end of the hook.

3.Environmental Elements: If your hook will be exposed to water, extreme temperatures, dirt and debris, chemicals, lubricants, or similar elements, make sure its material and finish will support whatever corrosion resistance is necessary for optimal performance.

4.Regulations: Rigging hardware is often subject to industry regulations to ensure safe usage in the application. Evaluate whether your snap link must comply with standards or regulations before you use it. Keep in mind that Huyett's snap hooks are not recommended for lifting.

Benefits

There are several advantages for using snap hooks in rigging applications. Here is an overview of the most common benefits:

1.Quick Connections: Snap links offer a quick, tool-free installation method - simply push the pin back to open the gate, loop the mating link through the hole, and release the pin so it springs back into place.

2.Reusability: Snap hooks facilitate temporary connections and can easily be reused as long as they are maintained. This feature makes them a cost-efficient investment for the long term.

3.Diverse Usage: The fastener's simple design and ease of use allows it to be used in a wide variety of applications in multiple industries without having to modify it for different use cases.

4.Durability: Huyett's snap links are available in 300 series stainless steel and carbon steel with polished and zinc clear finishes for durable and corrosion resistant material options.

How Much Weight Can a Snap Hook Hold?

This depends on the Working Load Limit (WLL) - also known as the Rated Capacity (RC) - of the hook. The WLL communicates the maximum weight that a component can support, which is computed by taking the minimum breaking load (MBL) and dividing it by a given safety factor (SF).

How Are Snap Hooks Measured?

The key measurements for a snap link are:

Overall length (from outside of the top of the hook to outside of the bottom of the small eye)

The hook inside diameter (the inside length between the wires at the hook end)

The eye inside diameter (the inside length between the wires at the eye end)

The wire diameter

These measurements will help you determine what kind of mating connection components are compatible with the hook of your choice.
