Lifting shackle: The indispensable "safety connecting ring" in lifting operations

In many fields such as heavy lifting, ship mooring, high-altitude operations, and rescue, a seemingly simple but crucial metal component - the shackle, always plays a key role in connecting everything. Although it is small, it directly affects the safety of the entire lifting system.

What is a shackle?
A shackle is a U-shaped or Ω - shaped metal connector with an open end closed with a bolt or bolt, used to connect ropes, rings, hooks, or chains. It is one of the most basic and commonly used components in rigging accessories, widely used in various industries due to its easy disassembly, strong load-bearing capacity, and safety and reliability. It is known as the "safety connection ring" for lifting operations.

Its basic structure consists of two parts:
1. Body: Carrying the core, usually designed in a U-shape or Ω shape.
2. Horizontal pin: A pin shaft used to close an opening, commonly available in screw pin, bolt type, or spring pin type.

The main types and characteristics of shackles
According to the shape of the body and the type of horizontal pin, shackles are mainly divided into the following categories:
·Divided by body shape:
·D-shaped shackles: the most common type. One side of its body is a straight rod, and the other side is an arc shape, with a clear direction of force. Most of the load is borne by the stronger straight rod part, which has high safety and the widest application.

·Bow shaped shackle (Ω - shaped): The body is symmetrical in the shape of a bow or horseshoe. The opening is wider than the D-shaped one, making it easier to connect multiple rigging or thicker ropes, but at the same size, the working load limit is usually lower than that of the D-shaped shackle.
·Chain link shackle: shaped like a chain link with a transverse pin, mainly used to connect chains or replace damaged chain links.
·Screw pin release: One end of the horizontal pin is threaded and fixed by screwing it into the threaded hole of the body. Installation and disassembly require the use of tools, with strong versatility.
·Bolt type shackle: The horizontal pin is a bolt that needs to be fixed with a nut and an open pin. The connection is more reliable, but disassembly is slightly cumbersome.
·Safety pin shackle: The horizontal pin is equipped with a spring lock or pin, which can be quickly opened and closed. It is commonly used in situations that do not require heavy loads but require frequent operation, such as stage construction, rescue, etc.

Correct use and installation specifications for shackles
Incorrect operation can significantly reduce the strength of the shackle and cause accidents. Please be sure to comply with the following regulations:
·Selection and inspection: Select the appropriate WLL shackle according to the actual load, and check for cracks, deformation, severe wear, or corrosion before use.
·Direction of force: Make sure the force is applied to the body of the shackle, not the transverse pin. Pull the body, not the pin. Lateral force or diagonal tension will significantly reduce the strength of the release buckle.
·Correct: The direction of force is along the centerline of the shackle body.
·Error: Apply force to the horizontal pin or pull diagonally at the opening.
·Installation of horizontal pins: It is necessary to ensure that the horizontal pins are fully tightened and in place. For bolt type shackles, the nut must be tightened and the split pin must be installed and opened.
·Avoid "twisting": The connected ropes or lifting straps should not be twisted or squeezed at the opening of the shackle, as this can damage the rigging and affect the normal closure of the shackle.

Although the shackle is small, it is a crucial link in the safety chain.
