Types and uses of safety hooks

The safety hook, an indispensable connecting tool in high-altitude operations, is also known as the "main lock" by practitioners. It undertakes the critical task of connecting ropes, straps, anchor points, and equipment.

The common safety hooks on the market are mainly divided into two designs: "D" - shaped and "8" - shaped.

The "D" - shaped safety hook, due to its shape design, allows the load-bearing frame to directly apply the load to the heaviest curved part when subjected to force, and the locked door does not bear the force, making it safer and more reliable in fall prevention applications.

Another type of "8" - shaped safety hook uses a spring tongue automatic reset mechanism to open and close, and a self-locking pin composed of a safety pin, compression spring, and trigger pin is installed on the lock arm.

In contrast, aluminum alloy safety hooks are lighter in weight and suitable for connecting various personal protective equipment and carrying multiple spare parts with you. However, their cutting resistance is poor, and they should be avoided from hanging with other sharp metal hooks when used.

The correct use of safety hooks is directly related to the safety of workers' lives. When using a safety hook, it is necessary to ensure that it is firmly attached to the mooring point and follow the principle of "hanging high and using low".
It is particularly important to note that the safety rope should be hung on the connecting ring for use, and should not be directly hung on the safety rope to prevent it from being cut off in the event of a fall.

In terms of maintenance, the safety hook should be regularly inspected for any deformation or cutting marks, and if so, it should be immediately stopped from use. After use, it should be cleaned in a timely manner. If sediment or iron filings invade the lock teeth, it will affect the performance of use.

The alloy steel safety hook should be maintained with rust inhibitor and stored in a dedicated container after use.
It is worth noting that if the safety hook accidentally falls from a height of more than 2 meters onto a hard ground, even if the appearance is intact, serious damage may have occurred inside, and it should be immediately scrapped.
According to the standard, the service life of seat belts is 3-5 years, and any abnormalities should be scrapped in advance.
