Wire rope clamps - also known as wire rope clips or wire clips - are used to connect two cable ends together or make a wire rope eye. They are less permanent alternatives to swage sleeves and an economical way to make cable assemblies in the field. Composed of a u-shaped bolt, a saddle (metal base), and two nuts, wire rope clips capture the two rope components between the u-bolt and the saddle and tighten the connection with the nuts.
fastenerrigging offers a selection of wire rope clamps in cast, forged, or malleable options that accommodate rope sizes from 1/8 in. - 2 1/4 in. and saddle materials of stainless steel, carbon steel, and cast iron.
What To Consider When Buying Wire Rope Clamps
Wire rope clips are an important component in many rigging scenarios. This makes it important to consider certain application elements for the safety and durability of the fastener performance.
- No Lifting: Wire clips are considered rigging hardware, and not all rigging hardware is suitable for overhead lifting. fastenerrigging's selection of clips are appropriate for rigging applications like pulling, towing, lashing, and anchoring.
- Proper Size Wire Rope: It is important for the rope to fit properly through the u-bolt; if it is too small, it could slip out during use and potentially drop the load. You can see the appropriate application rope size for each wire rope clip in the "Attributes" section of every individual clip description on the fastenerrigging website ( see a forged clamp example here).
- Rigging Load Requirements: A rigging component needs to be able to support the weight of its load. It is important to know how much weight the application will apply - this will affect the rope size, the clamp size, and the clamp's material.
- Environmental Elements: The clamp will also need to resist any environmental factors like water, temperature changes, lubrication, or chemical exposure. These factors will influence your clip's material.
Benefits of Using Wire Rope Clamps
While swage sleeves are great choices for permanent and secure applications, fastenerrigging's wire rope clips offer three main benefits for their intended use.
- Reusability: Clamps are held in place with nuts at the end of a u-shaped bolt, which makes them easy to remove and reuse in other applications.
- Load Bearing Capacity: fastenerrigging's selection of wire clips accommodate both light-weight rigging needs (with malleable clips) and critical, heavy-duty applications (with forged clips).
- In-Field Use: Because wire clips are easy to install with basic set of wrenches, they are well suited for in-the-field applications and repairs.
- Security: When fitted with the correct size wire rope and properly tightened, wire clips provide a reliable, secure rigging connection.
- Economical: Wire clips are cost-efficient fasteners, especially because they are reusable.
Wire Rope Clamp Product Line
fastenerrigging offers high-quality wire clips through the Aztec® Premium Lifting Hardware line. Our line includes wire rope hardware like thimbles, fist-grip clamps, and sleeves, along with a range of other lifting and rigging hardware components.
Different Types of Wire Rope Clamps
fastenerrigging offers three types of clamps that are distinguished by their materials and the way the saddles are manufactured.
- Forged: Forged clips are shaped from carbon steel and offer durability for critical applications.
- Cast: Cast clips are formed from stainless steel and poured into molds; these extra corrosion resistance.
- Malleable: Malleable clips are made from cast iron and are an economical choice for light-duty rigging applications.
How To Install Wire Rope Clamps
There are several steps to take to ensure your wire clip is correctly installed:
- Remove any sections of damaged wire rope.
- Tape or wrap the clean rope end with small wire.
- Measure the length of rope that will circle back around and through the clip (the turnback length).
- Mark the rope at the section it will meet just before the eye loop and the part of the rope that marks the "live end" (the rope that will be used in the application).
- The next step is to apply the clips. Slide the u-bolt over the live and the dead end of the rope; place the saddle underneath the dead end and place the u-bolt ends through the saddle. If the u-bolt and the saddle are already assembled, simply slide the rope ends through the assembly. Tighten the nuts onto the threaded u-bolt ends (do not overtighten them - this will cause kinks and breakage).
- Apply the first clip (you will need at least two) one saddle length above where the taped/wrapped end meets the end of the live end. Assemble the next clip just below the eye loop and snug up against the thimble.
- Remember that the u-bolt needs sit on top of the live end of the rope; the dead end should sit on the saddle with the nuts directly below it.
*Drop-forged clamps can be used for critical applications or any type of overhead lifting and suspension. DO NOT use a malleable wire rope clip for these applications. Typical assemblies require at least two or three clamps, but more may be required depending on the diameter of the cable.
